The Real March Madness AKA March Break: 7 Kid-Approved Snack Ideas to Help You Make It Through the Week

Ah, March Break. The time of year when the kids are off school, it feels like the 1003rd day of winter, and your house is ground zero for snack requests. It’s March Madness but without the basketball, just you jumping through hoops to keep your kids fed n’ happy.

Fortunately, I’ve got you covered with some ‘game-winning’ snack ideas. Dare I say they’ll be a fam-jam ‘slam dunk’??? (yes I dare!)

So, let’s warm up and jump into the March Break snack playbook.

1. Lazy Daisy’s Buttermilk Biscuit Pizza Pockets – My #1 Draft Pick

Did you know Daisy’s biscuits when defrosted turn into a totally amazing dough!?! You can roll it and shape it into a snack that’ll score major points with the kiddos.  AND who doesn’t love pizza? Lazy Daisy’s Buttermilk Biscuit Pizza Pockets.

Not only are they a breeze to make, but they’re also customizable, which means everyone can create their dream pizza in pocket form. Just think: pizza and a snack that’s not going to end up all over the floor. Plus, it’s a fun activity you can do together.

All you need is a pack of Lazy Daisy’s Bake-at-Home Buttermilk Biscuits, some sauce, shredded cheese, and any toppings your little ones are into. You can even sneak in a few veggies for the health-conscious players. Simply roll out the biscuits, spoon on a little sauce, sprinkle cheese, and fold them up into neat little pockets. Pop them in the oven for about 30 minutes, and you’ve got a snack that will have the whole team cheering.

Pro tip: Serve with a side of extra sauce for dipping!

2. Grandma’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies - Sweet and Comforting, Like a Game Winning Buzzer Beater

Nothing says "March Break" like a warm, comforting cookie, and my Grandma’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies always deliver. These cookies are chewy, full of oats, and packed with just the right amount of sweetness. They’re like a warm hug in cookie form. And, just like a buzzer-beater in basketball, they’re always a crowd-pleaser—whether you're serving them after a long day of playing outside or as a mid-afternoon pick-me-up.

I like to make a batch at the beginning of the week so we have snacks ready to go whenever the hunger strikes. Plus, they freeze beautifully, which makes them an easy grab when the game (or in this case, the “snack game”) is on. Add raisins, chocolate chips, or even sea salt and skor pieces if you’re feeling fancy.

The best part? They’re easy enough to make while the kids are jumping off the walls. Who says you can't multitask like a pro?

3. Fluffy Buttermilk Pancakes – Slamming Down the Breakfast Game

Don’t just reserve pancakes for breakfast. They’re so versatile, they deserve a spot in the snack game as well. And when you make them from scratch, you can control the ingredients to suit everyone’s taste. These fluffy pancakes (the same ones we serve at our café by the way) are perfect for serving up anytime—whether it’s the morning after a late-night movie marathon or as an afternoon snack.

Top with fresh fruit, whipped cream, or even a drizzle of maple syrup (because, Canada eh), or, if you’re anything like me, you’ll fold in some fresh blueberries or chocolate chips right into the batter THEN you drizzle them with loads of syrup and stack them up like a tower of deliciousness for extra fun.

Pro tip: If you have any leftover pancakes (highly unlikely, I know), they freeze really well. You’ll have ready-made pancakes for days when you need a quick snack or breakfast, which is a major win in my book.

4. DIY Movie Night Snack Box - The Ultimate MVP of Snacks

For this snack, Bulk Barn is your friend.

Every family has their own movie night traditions, and no movie night is complete without a snack box brimming with goodies. Why buy overpriced popcorn and candy when you can create your own DIY movie night snack box with a few simple ingredients?

Start with a base of popcorn. Blow your kids minds by doing it the old fashioned way on the stove, hot oil n kernels in the pot, shakey shakey and then pop pop POP!!! It’s so fun!

Then, let your kids go wild with toppings like jelly beans, pretzels, mini marshmallows, or even animal crackers. You can get creative with the mix-ins and make different boxes for each kid so they can feel like a snack-sorting champion.

Bonus points: Toss in a few extra treats from your pantry (think granola bars, fruit snacks, or even some of those oatmeal cookies we just talked about). With everyone’s snack needs covered, it’s time to hit play on the movie.

5. Frozen Yogurt Bark - A Sweet Slam Dunk

Need a little something sweet for the kiddos without a sugar overload?  Enter Frozen Yogurt Bark. It's light, refreshing, and completely customizable. Plus, it’s got that "wow factor" when you serve it up.

To make it, spread a layer of  your fave flavoured or plain yogurt on a baking sheet (I like Greek), sprinkle with your favorite toppings (berries, granola, or even a little drizzle of honey), and freeze for a few hours. Break it into pieces, and voila—your homemade frozen yogurt bark is ready to be enjoyed by the whole family.

6. Mini Veggie Quesadillas – Snack time Game Changer

I know, I know—getting kids to eat veggies during March Break is practically its own sport. But what if you could sneak them in without anyone noticing? That’s where mini veggie quesadillas come in. All you need are tortillas, cheese, and any veggies your kids will tolerate (trust me, they’re more likely to eat it if it’s melted under cheese).

Simply spread a little cheese, mild salsa and your choice of veggies (finely chop bell peppers, spinach, or even shred some zucchini) between two small tortillas, then fry in a dry frying pan about 2.5 – 3 minutes a side on medium heat until golden and crispy. I keep a lid on the frying pan so the heat makes the cheese good n’ gooey. Gently flip or the innards are going to spill and the coach’ll need to call a time out.

Using a pizza cutter, slice into wedges, and serve with sour cream or guacamole for dipping.

This snack is perfect for those moments when you want to score a point in the "getting your kids to eat veggies" game without them realizing they’re eating healthy. It's a win-win.

7. Apple Nachos - Sweet, Crunchy, and Kid-Friendly

Looking for a snack that’s both sweet and healthy? Try apple nachos! Simply slice up some apples,(I love Honeycrisp or Gala)  scatter them on a plate, drizzle with nut butter, granola, caramel or honey. The sweet, crunchy combination will have the kids coming back for more, and you might even feel good about how many apples you managed to sneak into their snack rotation.

So there you have it: seven kid-approved snacks to help you make it through the March Break Madness. Whether you’re building mini pizza pockets, whipping up a batch of cookies, or creating a DIY movie night snack box, these treats are sure to keep everyone in the family happy, full and supercharged!

Don’t forget that you can always stop by Lazy Daisy’s Café during the break. We have a delicious kid’s menu (all items are under $10 and 100% kid-approved) and we’ll even give them some fun Daisy colouring pages so that you can enjoy an adult snack (coffee), sit back and relax.

Remember: every family’s star player (you) needs to warm the bench sometime!

Happy March Break!
